Gay Dating Trends Are The Same As Straight Dating Trends

The music pounds and the door to the bar swings open and closed. To anyone passing by it would seem like a normal bar, and in many ways it is. The 20-somethings who inhabit the venue that evening chat with one another. They buy each other drinks, dance, exchange numbers and kisses.

The only difference is the bar is geared towards the gay population and those dancing to the beat only have eyes for the same sex.

Over the years as the homosexual lifestyle has become more and more accepted in mainstream society the gay population has come out in droves to express their love, relationships and desires. When you look at the facts the sex lives of gay people are no different than the sex lives of the straight population. The gay dating scene takes the same forms as the straight dating scene.

Many gay matches meet through mutual friends and a quarter are finding love online; just like the straight population. OkCupid.com, for example, has a large gay population who are searching for their perfect match.

There is also a notion that the gay subculture is, somehow, more promiscuous than the straight population. A study found that the median sexual partner for gay men, straight men, straight women and gay women is six across the board. The gay population, however, is moving more quickly towards the realm of online dating for obvious reasons.

Online dating gives the gay population an outlet for their relationship desires without first having to decipher if the person in question is gay or straight. The game of "gay or straight" has been played for decades, but many in the gay community feel pressure not to approach people of interest unless it is intrinsically known that they are also gay. The fear of offending straight men or women by hitting on them has led many in the gay community to head online. The useful little tags reading "gay", "straight" or "bi" help to ease concerns about bigotry and negative reactions.

Lasting relationships are also as common in the gay community as they are in the straight community. Gay relationships, in the past, didn't last as long as straight relationships simply because the level of stress associated with being "out" and involved. Today the social perception of gay relationships is changing, specifically in urban areas, making it easier for a gay couple to sustain a lasting bond with little stress and influence from the outside world.
